What is a Musicar System?

In 2015 we noticed a small group of enthusiasts on the forums replacing their tweeters with OEM Burmester versions. Everyone noted improvement, but we knew the performance would be much better adapting a quality aftermarket speaker—so we designed something. We started a group buy with the intentions of building around 10-20 pairs. We has 20 orders within a day, 60 orders within a week and eventually built almost 150 pairs in what was one of the most well-recieved group buys in Rennlist history.

Over the next couple of years we continued to offer our tweeter upgrade, but people we’re itching for more. In response, we started to look at how we could duplicate some of the more susccessful projects we’d had in our Portland workshop. Development began on our first full upgrade which included tweeters, midrange speakers, door woofers, sound damping and a premium amplifier/processor for the 991.1 platform. We’d spent hundreds of hours sourcing the factory connectors and hardware to make sure the upgrade was something a novice enthusiast could install themselves. That system was a great success with a sound that was universally loved by everyone that heard it.

After 10 years of continued development, these systems have evolved into complete, turn-key solutions for most of the 2013 and newer Porsche platforms. No matter where you are in the world, we can help you improve the experience of music in your car. And although things change, we’re continually evauating these systems to make sure we’re still aligned with our original goals — high-quality sound with a minimally invasive installation.

What's available for my car?

We currently support the 991.1, 991.2, 992.1, 992.2, 981, 718, 2017+ Macan(ICE) and soon the 2019+ Cayenne. We’re constantly working on development, so if your gonfiguration isn’t on this list, it may be in the future. That said, for the platforms we do support, the upgrades all follow a very similar “staged” approach. More info on options,m pricing and compatibility is listed below.

STAGE ONE

HIGH-PERFORMANCE TWEETERS : Starting at $695
When designing these upgrades, we’re evaluating the weakest points in the factory system and developing strategies to make improvements in the most problematic areas first. In the 991, this was the tweeters, and the 992 doesn’t stray from that shortcoming. Due to their low-quality composition and small diaphragm, the factory Bose tweeters sound tinny and harsh — especially at higher volumes. We can turn the treble down in the PCM, but at that point you’re also muting the top end information and sacrificing resolution.

Replacing these tweeters with a higher-quality driver allows for a more enjoyable listening experience at all volumes. The larger(28mm) soft-dome diaphragm of the Morel Elate Carbon tweeter has a much more linear response curve, yielding a more natural sound. We are also installing a less efficient driver, so it’s actually a bit less output at the same volume. This reveals more of the bass and midrange for a balanced listening experience. That said, this isn’t going to net us an “audiophile-like” experience from the Bose system. We’re still using factory power and all of the other original speakers. If your main complaint on the Bose is the overly-bright top end, this is the perfect solution.

STAGE ONE PLUS

PREMIUM ACOUSTIC TREATMENT : $995 - $1,395 (includes Stage One)
The acoustic environment is an important element in a car audio system, and before we get into upgrading the processing and power, we should make sure the larger speakers have a more optimum enclosure. Damping the door cavities does a few things for us. Number one, it adds mass and lowers the resonant properties. This helps improve the bass response of the speakers by reducing the amount of energy loss in lower bass notes. If the door vibrates when a lower note is played it actually absorbs and cancels out part of that sound wave instead of reflecting it, resulting in bass loss. This also works from the exterior in, suppressing road noise entering the cabin through the doors.

On top of that, we use a material called SoundShield that not only adds mass, but also has a closed-cell foam to isolate the panels from each-other. This means less rattles and audible vibrations in the doors. All of our damping materials are pre-cut for the doors, so all you have to do is clean the surfaces with alcohol and peel/stick the media in its respective location!

STAGE TWO

PREMIUM DSP AMPLIFIER : $2,995 - $4,295 (includes previous stages)

The single biggest improvement we can make in this system comes from power and processing. The original amplifier is underpowered and over-processed. The DSP(digital signal processor) inside that amp just isn’t powerful enough to equalize each speaker independently with the precision needed to correct their response in the car. On top of that, they try to create an equal experience for both driver and passenger, which means there’s no true optimization available for the driver. By replacing the original amplifier with our well-tuned DSP amplifier, we’re effectively doubling the power and improving the processing power ten fold.

More power means better dynamics — Dynamics are responsible for our ears perception of amplitude. If we look at the strike of a snare drum in a response chart, it starts with a loud, impactful strike and then trails off on the tail end. The same is true for every percussive note and most instruments in general. Vocals often also fluctuate in amplitude depending on the inflection and tenor. Without proper power, the initial impact of the notes isn’t much greater than the resonance they leave behind. That’s why the OEM system fails to invoke an emotional reaction, even to well-recorded music. With 75 watts to each midrange/tweeter and 180 watts to each door woofer, this upgraded amp has plenty of room in the tank to resolve those notes with the tenacity the recording intended for you to experience.

That said, power without control is a recipe for questionable results. Having a powerful DSP chipset within the amp allows us to equalize each speakers response to compensate for their shortcomings and that of the car’s acoustics. Using a special microphone, we measure the response of each speaker at the listening position. With those measurements we can adjust the equalizer of every speaker in the car to get the most accurate response the system is capable of. We can also delay each speakers arrive by milliseconds, which aligns their phase perfectly at your headrest. That yields a true stereo presentation on the dash and a sense of imaging — the audible/visual mind-trick of placing the vocals and instruments on the stage in front of us.

All of this comes together for a sound that’s more impactful, resolute, detailed, and emotionally captivating than the OEM system could ever accomplish.

    • 2017+ Macan (ICE) w/ BOSE

STAGE THREE

HIGH-RESOLUTION MIDRANGE + WOOFERS : $5,595 - $6,995 (includes previous stages)
Now that we’ve handled the tweeters, damping and power/processing sections, it’s time to improve our overall response by replacing the other core speakers responsible for the sound we hear — the midrange and woofers in the door.

The midrange speaker is arguably the most important in the whole system. Our ears are most sensitive to this range of frequencies when it comes to the discernible sound quality in a system. In the Stage Three configuration, we upgrade that to a carbon-kevlar version from Morel of Israel’s Elate series. That speaker maintains a much more linear response than the factory versions, so we get a more detailed and natural sound without having to apply as much processing. The result is a warmer and more full-bodied sound. Building on these principles, we also upgrade the 8″ door woofers to 9″ carbon-kevlars from Morel. These have been custom-designed to take full-advantage of the available power from the amplifier, and the results are a more textured and detailed bass response. We can truly hear the lighter plucks of the bass guitar and the subtleties in the lower vocal range.

Just like everything else up to this point, these are designed to utilize factory hardware and locations as well as direct-fit wiring harnesses. True plug and play.

STAGE THREE PLUS

PURE OUTPUT SUBWOOFER — Starting at $4,995 (standalone/add-on to Stage Three)
The 9″ door woofers do a great job with bass, but they have their limitations. Higher volumes and lower notes are harder for these speakers to reproduce accurately. This is why the absolute best-sounding systems always have a dedicated subwoofer.

Adding a subwoofer means having something new in the interior that didn’t exist prior. Knowing that, we put a heavy focus on the design of the subwoofer to make it look and feel like an extension of the original Porsche design language. Our enclosure for the 992 mounts on the rear package tray behind the back seats(or behind where they would be if you have a factory delete). We include steel brackets that secure to the factory hardware in the back so there are no holes drilled and we get a very secure connection to the car.

The enclosure itself is built from lightweight and extremely durable baltic birch and finished in an Alcantara suede/carpet combo. The entire process takes about 30 hours for each enclosure — there’s a lot of dedication to the details. The subwoofer we use is a 10″ Shallow mount from Hertz of Italy’s Mille Pro series. Great low-distortion output and a very wide frequency response, particularly in the lower register where the door woofers start to trail off. We mate that to a 600w Mono amplifier from Audiotec-Fischer of Germany. It’s secured to a mount that we’ve designed to tuck into the passenger quarter panel, completely hidden next to the subwoofer in the back.

Having a way to control the output level from the subwoofer is important. Some recordings need a little more and others need a little less. Having that control at your fingertips can be extremely useful. We ship the system with a universal mountable control knob that can go in a number of places, but the most common is the right side of the steering column. If you’re looking for something that makes a bit more of a statement, we can fabricate a custom controller for the center console that mounts just behind the shifter.
