E90 3-series sedan with Premium Sound

The BMW “Premium Sound” system

The BMW Premium Sound system is BMWs best offering – it was branded “Logic 7″ until the 2010 model year, when the branding was changed to “harman/kardon”. It sounds better than the HiFi system – its most glaring deficiency is that the low bass is lacking, and the next-most-common complaint is of the bright and thin upper midrange and treble. The speakers are better made than in the HiFi system, but the power level and the crossover filtering are still insufficent for high-fidelity sound, and the speakers also seem to be less durable than the HiFi speakers based on owner reports. The center speaker and the extra set of side speakers are really intended for “surround-sound” effects, and do not add to the performance or fidelity of the system.

The amplifier doesn’t have an analog input – the signal is derived from the MOST fiber-optic network in the car. This is what has made upgrades to this system more difficult than in other systems.

Musicar Certified Sound systems for this vehicle use a MOST-to-analog D/A converter, which provides us with 8 channels of flat, full-range, unprocessed sound, retains front/rear fade, and retains the OEM equalizer function. The “Surround” feature is deleted (thank goodness) and the center and side speakers are no longer supported (nor are they missed). We also upgrade the most important speakers, and replace the amplification. The stock head unit is retained and all functions besides the “Surround” button work just as before. All the new gear is plug-in and bolt-on with zero modifications required, and no vehicle reprogramming needed.

Upgraded amp-and-speaker systems starting at $1995

Musicar Certified sound systems upgrade the most important speakers, as well as the amplification. The stock head unit is retained and all functions work just as before. All the new gear is plug-in and bolt-on. The installation is 100% removable and reversible. We can install here in Portland, or we can help you find a local qualified professional resource and ship the system to you uninstalled.

Musicar systems for the E90 with Premium Sound are available in three levels of performance. Each has the following optional configurations:

- Rear-speaker delete
- Stock rear speakers retained
- Rear speakers upgraded

Each of the above can be ordered in a four-way architecture, with our OE-Look trunk subwoofer enclosure loaded with the appropriate woofer. In each of these systems, the underseat woofers are band-pass filtered and driven as dedicated midbass speakers. If you select a system with the trunk subwoofer, please advise us if your E90 is pre-2010 and has Sirius Satellite radio installed, thanks.

So while the chart might look imposing at first glance, we think you’ll decipher it fairly quickly. For a complete hardware list, please contact us via e-mail, thanks.

Our favorite systems, and the audiophile’s choice, are the “rear-speaker delete” packages. (We’ve been saying for years that rear speakers are a Commie plot.) However, if your car has Rear PDC parking sensors, we recommend rear-speaker retention so that the directional audible alert is also retained. If you listen to 95% rap and hip-hop, or techno and electronica, you may want to upgrade your rear speakers, since these genres do not benefit from the traditional stereo “front-stage” effect.

The majority of our clients order systems without the trunk subwoofer. Truly startling performance is possible without it – most people haven’t ever heard a system with two 8-inch woofers buried in the floor.

If you order a trunk-sub system, we limit how low into the bass region the underseat woofers play, and reserve these notes for the trunk subwoofer, which can play them with much less strain. This results in a four-way system – tweeter, midrange, mid-bass, and subwoofer – which many feel is the highest-performance system architecture there is.
